Women’s Art Library:
Artist in Residence & Exhibition 2018/19

Having chosen not to have reconstructive surgery following her mastectomy in 2014, writer and artist Claire Collison asks: ‘Why are the thousands of women like me so hidden? What anxieties do we share as a society where disguise is regarded as important as treatment? And how can women make informed treatment choices when there is so little representation of viable options within mainstream culture? Having used my body in my art practice for 30 years, I am in a rare position to explore this.’ As Artist in Residence at the Women’s Art Library, Claire has been revisiting her own archive, as well as looking at the work of other women, to see how to represent her current experience.  This ambitious exhibition includes new work, film, archive photography, writing, and original artefacts, as well as documentation of Collison’s recent life modelling performance.
